GREATNESS (The Greatest Pole Vault Story EVER (a true story))

Discipline is key at the USAPVA. We teach our vaulters to stand out by being GOOD at something (pole vaulting, school, work, family, church, anything) rather than deface their body (anybody can get a tattoo, earring, or shave their head -- well anybody except our vaulters). We push our athletes to succeed in all areas of their life: sports, family, school, etc. Because success in one area carries over into others.

HELP

My State has changed the specifications on PV pits and now we have no where to vault. What can we do?  This has been asked so many times, I decided to put some ideas up here on the home page.
  1. Acquire "supplemental" pits (sometimes referred to as "crash pits") to add on to your existing pits. These can be HJ pits, or other PV pits. If you stagger the events (HJ & PV) then the pits can be shared in this way to provide the additional coverage needed to meet the specifications. DO be careful to ensure the supplemental pits are interlocked so there is no "gap" or "crack" where a jumper could fall between them. You can get carabiners at any sporting goods store that sells rock climbing equipment, and these can be used to interlock the existing loops on your pits.
  2. Share PV pits between schools. If there are 2 neighboring schools with PV pits that do not match the new specification, move one set to the other school and connect them as specified in #1. Then share the facility between the 2 schools.
  3. Establish a common PV facility. Even if you select 1 school out of 4 - to buy the pits (each of the 4 schools contributing 1/4 of the cost of the pits - then locating them at a central location) and share across the 4 schools, it can give the kids a place to practice safely.
  4. Contact your local University and see if they will set up a PV "camp" to permit several schools to jump there, using their facilities. Since most collegiate programs have larger pits, this may be an easy answer. You will have to navigate through the administrators at the University who are very scared of NCAA recruiting violations - but by having an independent coach, and several schools use the facilities, it won't be a problem.
ONE SOLUTION: Use this type of supplemental pits to add to your current pits (preserving your current investment):
Pits_Upgrade_1 (standard pits), Pits_Upgrade_2 (pits components), Pits_Upgrade_3 (integrated solution).
