U.S. Pole Vault Academy

Bar Clearance Drills (graphics coming)

  1. Hoop drills. Imagine a big hula-hoop in front of the bar, parallel with it in height. The vaulter should shoot through this imaginary hoop before attempting to clear the bar.
  2. Back to the bar drill. The vaulter is to keep their back to the bar as long as possible. The vaulter should continue to pull through the top until he sees the bar even with his shoulders (underarms) before piking and crossing over the bar.
  3. Thumbs in. After throwing the pole back, the vaulter should turn both thumbs inward (towards each other) and drape over the bar. This ensures the chest isn't thrown into the bar.
