U.S. Pole Vault Academy

Advanced Techniques - The Takeoff

  1. The takeoff can be under, but it is critical that the pole be fully extended before it hits the back of the box. It is my opinion that the future of the vault will include the pole bending before we hit our last step, and we will run up under our poles. This will enable us to move to 22' or 23' poles and jump much higher.
  2. There are some vaulters out there that believe so strongly in being tall at the plant, that they take off 1, 2, or 3 shoe lengths out. For most of us, we'll crash into the box and get hurt, but for those with world-class speed (10.5 / 100m or faster), they believe it gives them a mechanical advantage over the pole. It is my opinion that the advantage is not enough to compensate for what you lose by having to jump further into the pit and the slowing of your body in mid-air.
  3. There is no clear advantage yet proven that taking off out versus on or under.
